Japanese Knotweed is a herbaceous perennial plant, native to Japan, China and Korea. It was introduced to the UK in the mid-nineteenth century as an ornamental garden plant. Japanese Knotweed grows rapidly and has been deemed and invasive weed by the Wildlife and Country Side Act 1981. It is also listed as one of the 100 worst invasive species by the World Conservation Union.
With no natural pests or diseases Japanese Knotweed invades habitats and out-competes native plants and wildlife. It’s rapid growth can damage buildings and road surfaces, reduce land value and result in prosecution if allowed to spread on neighbouring land. Japanese Knotweed is very tolerant to different soil types, temperature extremes and extend 7m wide and 3m deep. The weed is resilient to cutting, vigorously resprouting and spreading. Japanese Knotweed can grow up to 10cm per day. Watch it grow
